What Is Congestive Heart Failure?
Congestive heart failure (CHF), or heart
failure, is a condition in which the heart can't pump enough blood (cardiac
ischemia) to the body's other organs. The "failing" heart keeps
working but not as efficiently as it should. People with heart failure can't exert
themselves because they become short of breath and tired. (read more about congestive
heart failure...) | What Are The Symptoms?
As blood flow out of the heart slows,
blood returning to the heart through the veins backs up, causing congestion in
the tissues. Often swelling (edema) results. Most often there's swelling in the
legs and ankles, but it can happen in other parts of the body, too. Sometimes
fluid collects in the lungs and interferes with breathing, causing shortness of
breath, especially when a person is lying down. (read more about congestive
heart failure symptoms...) | How Can
I Avoid CHF?
To avert a first heart attack or stroke, physicians
should routinely assess patients general risk of cardiovascular disease
beginning at age 20, according to new American Heart Association recommendations
published in todays Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association.

What Factors Lead To Congestive Heart Failure? There are five
preventable risk factors that will lead to coronary heart disease. - Smoking
- Physical
Inactivity
- High Blood Cholesterol
- High Blood Pressure
- Being
Overweight
A person who does not control any one of these risk factors
is an excellent target for Congestive Heart Failure. One who is not in control
of two or more of these factors is at a huge risk of Congestive Heart Failure
and, eventually, a heart attack. (read more about the factors
leading to congestive heart failure...) | |
